BERKELEY, Calif. (KGO) -- UC Berkeley's chancellor Nicholas Dirks is promoting an ambitious 40 year plan to build a satellite campus on university owned land in Richmond, between Interstate 580 and the Bay.

The UC Berkeley Global Campus at Richmond Bay would operate in coordination with universities from around the world to conduct research on climate change, world health, big data and urban studies.

Officials say UC money would not be used and that philanthropy, partnerships with international schools and corporations would likely be the source of funding.
