When Kim and Kanye (or "Kimye") finally got their Vogue cover, there was huge media backlash: why is this woman even famous? But editor-in-chief Anna Wintour defended the cover. Here are more magazine covers that caused controversy when they appeared on newsstands.
When a very pregnant Demi Moore posed nude for Vanity Fair in 1991, the magazine's editor Tina Brown told USA Today that the cover "breaks the mold of every stereotype of celebrity glamour." Some magazine sellers, however, were horrified, and sold the mag in a paper bag, like Playboy.
Tina Fey looks stunning on this Vogue cover, but her trademark scar on the left side of her face was Photoshopped out - angering many readers.
When Time Magazine ran this photo of a 26-year-old mom breastfeeding her 3-year-old son, readers were disgusted and outraged. The article outlined alternative parenting methods, namely attachment parenting.
Songstress Adele is as famous for her voluptuous figure as her powerhouse voice, but Vogue came under fire for excessively slimming her down on this cover.
Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev appears on the cover of the Aug. 1, 2013 issue of "Rolling Stone." Readers were incensed that he looked "too handsome", like a rock star instead of a terrorism suspect.
Finally, Barbie makes an appearance on the 2014 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, further deepening the connection between male desire and unrealistic female body types. Part of her campaign was the hashtag #unapologetic, so we'll have to stay tuned as to what effect she has as a cover model.
Tell the story as you see it.
