Firefighters help donate bikes to North Bay fire victims

MILL VALLEY, Calif. (KGO) -- Firefighters are giving back to the very people they helped in the North Bay fires last month. They've been collecting bikes to donate to those who lost everything.

Firefighters from Marin County, South Marin, Mill Valley spent the morning loading donated new and used bikes into vans. So far, they've collected 600 bikes because they will be giving them away to family members who were burned out of their homes in the recent North Bay fires.

Mechanics from Mike's Bikes have already tuned up the bikes. They will be handed out Saturday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office in Santa Rosa.

"Hopefully it's a good thing for them. Bring some normality to their lives let them ride their bikes around near the area where they live. I know I'd want a bike if I lost them," says Captain Jesse Rudnick with Marin County Fire.

Mike's Bike's, Benjamin Franklin Plumbing, local fire departments and the CHP came together to organize the event. Their goal was to collect 1,000 bikes, but they would still love more donations. If you have a bike you don't use, you can drop it off at any of the fire stations in Marin County, Southern Marin, Mill Valley or Cal Fire Station in Santa Rosa.

They are also taking donations on a GoFundMe page.
