Oakland's Genova Delicatessen closing after nearly a century

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- A deli named Genova Delicatessen, which has been in Oakland for almost a century, is closing its doors for good over a rent dispute.

"When I was 12 he made my first sandwich here, I've been coming here ever since," one person said.

Heartbroken fans filled the store Monday to get one of the deli's famous sandwiches or pastas. "Shock and dismay, this is a staple in our neighborhood, I have been coming here since I was 8 years old, my mom would bring me here," Genova customer Mia Settles-Tidwell said.

"I just can't believe that they are leaving here. This is the best sandwich shop in the Bay Area, best everything, their lasagna, their ravioli," Genova customer Ayana Brumfield said.

Four generations of the De-Vincenzi family have run the deli, but they aren't going away as their Napa deli will remain open.

Genova's Oakland location is set to close April 30.
