SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The first round of surgeries in a rare six-way kidney transplant took place on Thursday at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco.

Doctor Bill Bry said in a statement that the surgeries went smoothly.

Zully Broussard is out of surgery and resting comfortably. Her surgery went well, taking approximately 90 minutes with no complications Thursday morning, Bry said.

On Friday, the final three donors and three recipients will undergo the same procedures, completing the chain.

Recovery times vary for this type of surgery, but the donor typically needs two to three days while the recipient needs about three to five days.
