Sandhya Patel takes Ice Bucket challenge
ABC7 News Meteorologist Sandhya Patel took on the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness for a disease known as ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- More than $9 million has now been raised for ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease since July 29 from the Ice Bucket Challenge.

People who take the challenge typically donate to ALS or they pay for refusing to douse themselves with ice-cold water and then challenge friends.

The challenge started in support of Peter Frates who was diagnosed with ALS in 2012. It robbed the former Boston college baseball captain of his ability to walk and talk.

And now, the challenge that is sweeping social media has reached ABC7 News news as well. Meteorogist Sandhya Patel and Anchor Dan Ashley have taken the challenge.

The challenge is part of an awareness campaign for ALS, which causes a loss of muscle control, and ultimately takes away your ability to eat, speak and breathe.

The pressure behind the Ice Bucket Challenge is hard to turn down. That's why ABC7 News reporter Alan Wang took on the challenge, and called out colleagues Dan Ashley, Ama Daetz, and Sandhya Patel to do the same.
