NAPLES, Fla. (KGO) -- The family of a Florida high school football player is hoping to turn a freak accident into a national safety campaign.

Spencer Scholtz is now permanently blind in his left eye after getting poked by an opposing player during his first game last month. "I had to go low to block [an opposing player] and his hand went perfectly into that little slot in my face mask. Nationwide, I would like everyone to know that this can happen," Scholtz said.

The Scholtz family wants other players to protect their eyes, so they've started a fundraiser to help buy eye shields for anyone who can't afford one.
