Woman donates kidney to stranger, and now they're getting married

Ashley McIntyre donated her kidney to a total stranger a year ago. Now she's engaged to her kidney recipient, and their baby is due in June.

"As soon as we started dating -- not long after that -- was when we realized, this was it," McIntyre, 25, told ABC News.

McIntyre's love story began in January 2014, when she overheard her mother and grandmother discussing a story they heard on the radio regarding a 25-year-old man her age in need of a kidney transplant.

The man had lost his father to brain cancer in 2012, and his house burned down on Christmas Day 2011. "It was just like one thing after another for them . . . I was like 'Well, I'm type-O and I don't have any health problems,'" McIntyre told ABC News.

The next day, McIntyre called to volunteer her kidney and tested started shortly thereafter. She didn't want to meet the man receiving her kidney, Danny Robinson, until she was sure it was a match. The two finally did meet in March, and although McIntyre was nervous and thought Robinson was cute, she never imagined they would start dating.

"As soon as we started talking, it was like our families had known each other forever," McIntyre told ABC News.

After the surgery, McIntyre and Robinson stayed in touch. It wasn't until Memorial Day, however, that the two started dating.

"On June fifth, we made it official," McIntyre told ABC News.

And on Christmas Day, Robinson proposed to McIntyre.

"He is truly a genuinely good person . . . we have so much fun together," she told ABC News.

The couple's baby is due in June.

"He's going to be a great dad," McIntyre told ABC News.
