SANTA ROSA, Calif. (KGO) -- A home invasion suspect is dead and another was critically injured after a homeowner exchanged gunfire with them in Santa Rosa early Monday morning.

Sheriff's deputies fired tear gas rounds through the window shields of a pickup truck after two home invasion suspects refused to come out.

It started just before 2 a.m., at the family's home located on the 600 block of Acacia Lane.

Two armed men broke through the front door, while the homeowner, his wife and two kids were inside.

"The homeowner armed himself with a handgun and engaged the suspects and shots were fired between the suspects and the homeowner," Santa Rosa Police Department Sgt. John Cregan said.

The homeowner shot the two intruders and they ran off and got into a truck. Then, the driver took them to Kaiser Hospital nearby.

Sheriff's deputies saw the truck in the parking lot and ordered the suspects out.

All but the driver refused and a long standoff ensued.

Finally, deputies fired teargas into the truck and took the suspects out.

"One suspect had critical gunshot wounds and another subject was located deceased in the back seat of the vehicle.

Investigators had roped off the block where the shooting occurred.

They took evidence from the home, a home that police say looks like a marijuana grow.

"It appears that home was targeted to the fact that there was a large quantities of marijuana being grown their at that residence," Cregan said.

Neighbors were caught by surprise. "I heard three bang bang bangs and I thought someone was shooting fire crackers, you know," Carla Schiffman said.

Police also detained the driver of the truck who says he had nothing to do with the incident. He says he picked up two strangers and took them to Kaiser because they were injured.

Police continue to investigate the incident as more information becomes available.

Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to call the Santa Rosa Police Department Violent Crimes Investigation Team at (707) 543-3590.
