SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- San Jose Police are still trying to find out what led to a double shooting off McLaughlin Avenue at 8:55 Wednesday morning, leaving an adult man dead and an adult woman wounded.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene on Creston Lane where police found his body in the middle of the street. The woman was able to call 911 for help. She suffered at least one non-life threatening wound outside a residence and was able to seek shelter at a nearby home.

San Jose police are investigating a shooting that left a man dead and a woman injured inside a home on Creston Lane Wednesday.

The one block long street was clogged by police vehicles as officers began to canvass the neighborhood, seeking witnesses or any other information that could help piece together what had precipitated what they believe is an attempted murder-suicide.

Early on, police detained and handcuffed several adults, who live at a house on Creston Lane. However, about an hour later, officers removed the handcuffs as they determined the dead man was the sole suspect and that there were no other victims.

Police have not identified the two adults. Their ages and city of residence also are unknown. Police spokesman Sgt. Enrique Garcia said the man and woman knew each other, but their relationship, if any, has not been determined.

"He shot the female victim and then shot himself, committed suicide. Both victims are adults," said Sgt. Enrique Garcia witht he San Jose Police Department.

Charles Najar, who works with the non-profit group From the Street to the Grave, which has a grant from the mayor's office to provide services and counseling to victims of gang activity. He said this is a hot spot for gang violence. He came out to scene.
