1 teen dead, 22 hurt after Halloween hay ride flips
A teenager is dead and two others are in critical condition after a Halloween-themed hay ride careened down a hill and crashed in the Maine woods.

MECHANIC FALLS, Me. (KGO) -- A 17-year-old girl has died after an accident during a Halloween-themed hay ride. The wagon went down a steep hill, crashed into a tree, and overturned. Twenty-two people were injured. Officials say the driver and a teenage boy sustained critical injuries.

The Androscroggin County Sheriff's Office says approximately 30 riders were onboard the Gauntlet Haunted Night Ride at Harvest Hills Farm Saturday night when a jeep pulling the hay wagon missed a sharp turn on the heavily wooded trail.

"He missed the curve and went into wood line, and it looks like the trailer jackknifed and hit a tree," said Sheriff Guy Desjardins.

Staff members say those onboard were thrown from their seats when that trailer overturned

"When we got down there, there were just a lot of people laying around," said Harvest Hill spokesperson Scott Lansley.

Police say a mechanical problem may have contributed to the accident. State fire marshals inspect and license mechanical amusement rides in Maine, but hayrides do not require such licensing.

The accident occurred at Harvest Hills Farm in Mechanic Falls, about 25 miles southwest of Augusta.
