SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- A car was stuck on a flooded frontage road near the Bay Bridge toll plaza Tuesday morning, just as high tide was coming in.

It appears the people inside the car fell asleep.

We can laugh a bit because it all ended well - once the tide receded and the couple drove off.

There is a beach with a gravel road on the other side of westbound I-80 just past the toll plaza. That's where they were parked.

Shots from Sky7 gave us the best view of the roadway and the little red car stranded by the tide.

A man and woman gave CHP a thumbs-up that they were OK and told officers they drove out to the beach last night, fell asleep and then woke up surrounded by water.

Embarrassed by what had happened, they drove off after about an hour, once the tide receded.

"At this point, I think we're just going to let them drive out of here and get them on their way. There weren't really any criminal acts that we observed. I think the best thing to do is let them get on their way. I think they've learned their lesson," CHP Ofc. Vu Williams said.

Williams says this is not the first time this has happened and you can actually be cited for illegal camping.

On sunny days, you'll often see kite surfers off the beach.

The good news is that this didn't stall commuters because it couldn't be seen from the roadway.

It did tie up a couple of CHP officers on a busy morning, though.
