OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- A man is dead and another injured after a horrific crash near a major Oakland intersection.

The car was sheared in two after a violent collision with another car at MacArthur Blvd. and High Street Wednesday night. The Acura CL was ripped apart when it hit a tree, half of the car resting a block away from the other half.

The passenger survived and was taken to the hospital and was listed in stable condition. The driver died at the scene.

The driver has been identified as 21-year-old Jamil Brown, who lived in Oakland before moving with his mother to Fairfield.

"I get down here and see the scene and it was just bad," Donte Johnson, the uncle of the victim, said.

Johnson shared photos of his nephew from his Instagram account, including one of Brown and his baby boy, who's 6 months old.

"You just got to pull through and pray. That's all we can do. Let God take care of it," he said.

Police say Brown was speeding on MacArthur Blvd., where the speed limit is just 25 mph.

Officers are talking to witnesses to see what was happening right before the crash and if this was a possible case of street racing.

They're checking with area businesses for surveillance video.

Meanwhile, friends and family of Brown are grieving - a son, nephew, friend and father now gone.

"Every time I see him on his Snapchat, he was with his son or something. Laughing or something. Smiling. That dude brought a bright joy on everybody's life he touched," friend Ramon Ammons said.

Police said they don't know right now if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
