Services are set for a Richmond police officer who was killed last week.

Officer Gus Vegas will be remembered at a funeral service Friday and mourners packed his Vallejo church Sunday to honor his memory and support his family.

"There's so many people who have just come alongside of me and my family. I have never felt so much love in my life," said Gus' wife Sandra Vegas.

The outpouring of support for Richmond police officer Gus Vegas and his family continued during a Sunday service. People packed The Hill Vallejo, where just last week Vegas sat in the front row.

"There's so many people who have just come alongside me and my family. I have never felt so much love in my life," said Gus' wife Sandra Vegas.

For pastor Scott Peterson, the loss is personal.

"Gus Vegas' untimely death has brought incredible turmoil and pain that cannot be described," Peterson said.

Peterson and Vegas has been close friends more than 25 years. They raised their children together and took family vacations together. Vegas was a foster parent. He leaves behind 10 kids.

"Gus has been amazing with his capacity to love so many people," Peterson said.

Officer Vegas was shot and killed at his Vallejo home Thursday. His grandson's father is accused of the murder.

Mayor Osby Davis came to Sunday's service. "Well, I think it was important to support Sandra and the family," Davis said.

Vegas' wife is without him this Valentine's Day. "I miss my husband and I love him. He will be missed. He was a great, great, great, great police officer," she said.

Church members will gather again Thursday night to remember Vegas. A memorial service is planned for Friday.
