SANTA CLARA COUNTY, Calif. -- A male who wielded a large knife and a gas can while threatening sheriff's deputies west of Los Gatos this morning has been taken into custody, Santa Clara County sheriff's officials said.

Deputies responded around 6:50 a.m. to the area of Black Road and state Highway 17 after a man crashed his vehicle into either his own or a family member's property, sheriff's spokesman Sgt. James Jensen said.

The suspect, who was apparently suffering from mental health problems, was armed with the knife and gas can and threatened deputies while telling them to shoot him, Jensen said.

Crisis intervention-trained deputies and negotiators responded to talk to the man, Jensen said. Sheriff's officials then wrote on Twitter shortly after 9 a.m. that the suspect has been taken into custody.

Nearby Lakeside Elementary School at 19621 Black Road has shut down for the day because of safety concerns and the street closures caused by the incident, Lakeside Joint School District interim superintendent Lisa Gonzales wrote on Twitter.
