Police are searching for a suspect accused of fatally shooting a 14-year-old boy on Ohio Avenue in Richmond Monday morning.

Responding officers found a teen suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso. Medical responders were unable to stabilize the teen and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim was apparently found on the Richmond Greenway trail. Police said witnesses reported seeing a male suspect running from the scene.

Xavier McClanahan was a freshman at Kennedy High School.

Family members arrived a short time after another young life was lost, one of their own gunned down on a bike path in the middle of the morning.

"He never sassed his momma, his parents nothing, but you know, once you're out on the street, anything may happen, anything may happen," Aunt Barbara Whittler said.

"A lot of people told me it was him, but I had to come see for myself," friend Daniel Millan said.

Neighbor Mike Latour heard the gun shot, but didn't realize until later that it was a young teen who had lost his life.
"He didn't have a chance to live yet, you can imagine what his last thoughts were before he died," Ltour said.

Richmond police wouldn't say if the shooting was gang-related, but they are concerned about what might happen next.

Richmond Police Department Capt. Mark Gagan said. "We know that when a young person is killed in a very public way, in a brazen daylight shooting, it can prompt retaliation and really stir a lot of future retaliatory violence."

"Just keep your kids close to you, know where they're all times. That's all, that's all I can say," Whittler said.

Police combed the BART tracks and surrounding area all morning, looking for evidence. They believe one gunman was involved.
