SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- San Jose police are investigating after officers shot and killed a man with a knife following a domestic violence attack.

The male stabbing victim is still in critical condition. The female victim was released from the hospital Tuesday morning.

Police say they do not have body camera footage of the officer involved shooting but eyewitnesses tell ABC7 News that the stabber did not listen to an officer when told to drop the knife repeatedly.

"He was saying something about family," said James Ballard.

Ballard and Victor Manuel tried to help their neighbors who were entangled in a domestic violence fight.

"He actually got stabbed in his face and his neck and a lot of blood was coming out," said Ballard.

A male victim stumbled into the street near South Third and Martha around 6:15 on Monday night.

"The guy with the knife first because he was coming out to stab the guy some more and the lady grabbed him from behind his neck and they both spun around and fell to the ground," he said.

Then the man, who police say is an estranged husband, began stabbing the female victim too.

"I ran to police when he got here and I said he needs to stop this guy because he already stabbed two people. He asked me where and I pointed the guy out," said Ballard.

That's when Ballard says a young girl came out of the house directly in the line of fire behind the suspect.

"The cop was good. He didn't pull the trigger right away. I called the girl from where she was she came around and the cop repeatedly asked him to stop," said Ballard.

Chief Eddie Garcia says the man still held the knife as the officer fired.

"We don't know where he was shot from until we get the coroner's investigation, but he was shot as moving towards the house," explained San Jose Chief Eddie Garcia.

"First it was like three in a row and the guy kind of like turned back and looked at him, turned around and kept walking after being hit three times. He fired two or three more," said Ballard.

The man died on scene.

Police say they responded to the same location for a domestic violence call in December and the female victim had a temporary restraining order against her estranged husband.

The department has not yet released the name of the officer involved.
