SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Police in San Francisco are looking for the driver of a white van who hit and killed a pedestrian near the Broadway Tunnel early Friday morning.

The pedestrian was a 60-year-old, who lived in Chinatown.

Police say a white van was seen driving on Powell Street and turned right on Broadway when he hit and killed the man.

Someone spotted the body in the road and ran to the police station a block away.

It's not clear if the man was in the crosswalk at the time

"We don't know if the person was dragged or the impact landed the body where it was discovered," said Officer Albie Esparza with SFPD.

Police say the driver never stopped and continued westbound through the tunnel. The white van they're looking for has no windows and the front end is sure to have some damage.

"The guy probably not paying attention or something, early in the morning, somebody getting hit like that can happen anytime," said Gordon Mark, who lives in Chinatown.

Neighbors know cars often speed as they approach the tunnel.

Police are hoping surveillance cameras on both sides of the tunnel will help them identify the driver.

But those cameras may have limited range or may not have been working.

This is the fifth pedestrian killed in San Francisco so far this year.
