SAUSALITO, Calif. (KGO) --Marin County is mourning the death of the mother of the late rapper Tupac Shakur. Afeni Shakur Davis was an activist and philanthropist in her own right who left a big impact on the community.
Afeni Shakur was with a family friend last night in her Sausalito home when she started experiencing some discomfort, authorities said. A spokesman for the Marin County sheriff's office says the friend called 911.
"Upon their arrival they immediately began to provide CPR to (Afeni Shakur Davis.) She was immediately transported to a local hospital where she was treated by physicians for an hour, at which point they determined she had died from what is believed to be some type of cardiac event," said Marin County Sheriff's Lt. Doug Pittman.

Shakur was an inspiration to her son, rap artist Tupac, who was killed in 1996 at the age of 25. She oversaw his music catalog after his death. She was a political activist and a philanthropist known for her impact nationally and also at home.
A long time Marin County resident spoke out this morning about the loss-saying Afeni Shakur and his sister were good friends.
"I am really hurt because that lady was really sweet. She helped everybody, people that couldn't help themselves, unfortunates, kids, she went out of her way to help people, even if they deserved it or not, she going to be missed," said Ricky Buquia, family friend.
The Marin County coroner will do some more investigating to determine whether an autopsy is necessary; they'll look at her medical history and talk with relatives. The sheriff's office says they do not think any foul play was involved. Afeni Shakur was 69-years-old.
