CONCORD, Calif. (KGO) -- Police are investigating the discovery of a female body floating in a duck pond at a park in Concord early Monday morning.

A group of young men with plans to go fishing at 2 a.m. Monday morning at Concord's Newhall Park made the grim discovery.

"We went over to the railing and saw blood like before the pond. So we looked into the pond because we saw something floating, and it was like an orange shirt. It was a girl I guess," witness Roman Pagan said.

They called police, who confirmed an adult woman was found in the pond. They haven't said how she died.

"It's a nice park. I always walk here, it's a nice park," a neighbor said.

People out for their morning walk found themselves being detoured around crime tape and reacting with shock when they heard why.

"That's horrible. There's normally, a lot of families that come around here, people walking their dogs. That's frightening," Concord resident Stephanie Espinoza said.

But those who saw the body are really having a hard time coming to terms with it.

"It was crazy, honestly. I am shocked. I wanted to believe like it wasn't even true. I was making myself think it wasn't true. I would never think that would happen right near here," Pagan said.

Police have not released any more information about the victim.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Detective Greg Pardella at (925) 603-5922 or can call a tip line at (925) 603-5836 if they wish to remain anonymous.
