ANTIOCH, Calif. (KGO) -- The Contra Costa County Fire Department is trying to retrieve a person's body from the water in a canal in Antioch near the Delta de Anza Regional Trail.

Police said this is not a homicide investigation and they say the description of this person matches a missing person report on file.

Authorities received a call come to a canal next to the Antioch Community Park at 8:45 a.m. Firefighters say it was tough to recover the body because conditions were rough and it took about 45 minutes.

A man out walking his dog discovered the body when his dog lead him to the canal.

"Made my heart pound. Adrenaline flowing is still coming down slowly. Maybe some closure for the family, loved ones, who lost this young man," said witness Phillip Moore.

"It doesn't look it on the surface, but there's a lot of water in the canal. The canal was actually 8-feet deep in this particular location and there's of water moving through there," said Contra Costa County Fire Marshal Robert Marshall. "We needed to employ our swift auto-rescue techniques to be able to get the body safely and make sure the rescuers lives were not in danger."

The man who called 911 described the victim as a man. Police have not released any information about the person.

The investigation is still underway but police say there's a good chance they'll release more information later Thursday.
