Sky7 HD was over the scene shortly after it began around 9:30 a.m. with a report of an armed man in a building in San Francisco's Chinatown neighborhood.
The standoff finally ended after five hours of off and on negotiations with a hot prowl burglar who holed up in a Chinatown apartment building.
SWAT team members converged on the 900 block of Pacific Avenue in Chinatown to an apartment building. This, after patrol officers responded to a 911 call from the victim of a residential burglary in progress.
"When officers arrived at the scene responding to the call we noticed the suspect was still on the scene, still at the residence," said San Francisco police public information officer Grace Gatapandan.
Police say the burglar came into the apartment unit through the roof and he barricaded himself in the rear kitchen area.
"There was a shot fired. The shot fired was not from an officer, it was from the suspect. So now we're dealing with a hot prowl burglary," Gatapandan said.
The officers quickly retreated, evacuating the resident with them. SWAT team members and police negotiators rushed over. Residents in adjacent buildings were ordered to leave. Other residents on the street were told to shelter in place. The stalemate continued into the fifth hour.
Then there was a flash bang and the SWAT team rushed into the apartment unit. The suspect could be seen running out into a nail salon next door. Officers chased him inside. Workers in the salon ran out to safety. The suspect would not go down easily.
"Once the suspect went inside, he violently fought with officers. He was covered in glass and resisting by biting, spitting," Gatapandan said.
Police say the burglar was not injured, but he was put into a gurney and transported to the hospital. A number of officers did sustain injuries.
"I have a total of six officers that are injured from this incident, all non-life-threatening injuries," Gatapandan said. "But in this incident officers were slashed by the glass and there was blood on blood contact between the suspect's blood and the officers' blood.
It all ended the way police wanted, no shots fired.
