Police have arrested a 26-year-old man in connection with a home invasion and attempted sexual assault of a woman.

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- Police have arrested a 26-year-old man in connection with a home invasion and attempted sexual assault of a woman.

It happened at the Lockwood Gardens Housing Complex in Oakland.

Oakland Housing Authority crews were out changing the broken bedroom window on the apartment where the break-in happened.

"We're horrified whenever there are break-ins and violence in our neighborhoods," said Eric Johnson, with the Oakland Housing Authority.

Lockwood Gardens is a 250 unit public housing project not far from the Oakland Coliseum.

Oakland police got a 9-1-1 call just after 4 a.m. from neighbors who heard a woman screaming and got there while the assault was still in progress.

"We did actually hear the woman, did observe the suspect still in the residence," explained Officer Marco Marquez with OPD.

The suspect did try to escape by kicking through the bedroom window, but was quickly caught.

The victim suffered moderate injuries and was sent to the hospital.

Several neighbors heard the screaming but didn't want to go on camera.

Meantime, the housing authority's own police force, which used to patrol 18 hours a day, will now be working around the clock.

"We intend to extend those hours and the number of patrols in the neighborhood," said Johnson.

The Oakland Police Department is investigating whether the suspect is wanted for other similar crimes.
