OAKLAND, Calif. -- No one was injured when a suspect in a hit-and-run collision opened fire Sunday evening on an off-ramp from northbound Interstate Highway 880 in Oakland, officials with the California Highway Patrol said.

The shooting occurred shortly after the collision was reported at about 5 p.m. on Highway 880 near High Street, CHP officials said.

The suspect, who was driving a silver Mercedes SUV, was speeding north on the right shoulder of the highway and decided to merge into the far right lane.

As the driver merged, the SUV struck a Toyota minivan and a Toyota sedan and the SUV's driver got out and fled.

CHP and police said a short time later the suspect opened fire on a motorist on the High Street off-ramp, just north of the collision.

No one was injured in the shooting. The suspect is still at large.

Two people in the collision went to the hospital with minor injuries.

Police initially said that shots were exchanged between the occupants of two vehicles.

The investigation into the collision and the shooting, which was handled by Oakland police, forced the closure of the off-ramp and two lanes of northbound Highway 880 for about 2.5 hours.

Oakland police and the CHP continue to investigate both incidents. Anyone with information about them is asked to call Oakland police or the CHP at (707) 551-4100.
