Vallejo police say they were ambushed by armed suspect at Starbucks

VALLEJO, Calif. (KGO) -- Vallejo police say they were ambushed Sunday night by a man with an assault weapon as they took a break at a local Starbucks.

The suspect was identified as 41-year-old Suisun City resident Adam Powell. Police say he is a convicted felon with robbery and drug-related offenses.

Vallejo Police Department Chief Andrew Bidou said at a press conference Monday that the officers were on a coffee break when Powell appeared in the doorway of the shop and "attempted to assassinate" them.

"Actions certainly indicate that the officers were particularly targeted. He drove by the location in a vehicle several minutes before he presented himself at the front doors and leveled his weapon at the officers," Vallejo Police Lt. Jeff Bassett said.

"As Powell tried to shoot the officers, his weapon malfunctioned and he was not able to get off a shot," Bidou said.

Investigators said Powell can be seen running away in surveillance video taken from a gas station next door.

Second later, the officers caught up with him. "He was attempting to clear that weapon, presumably to use it, while they were chasing him," Bassett said.

Officials said Powell was shot three times and besides having an assault weapon, he also had a loaded handgun and was wearing body armor.

The suspect is the father of 2-year-old Adonis Powell, a toddler who was shot accidentally five hours earlier inside a home in Suisun City.

Police and family members said Powell was there when the boy was shot, but took off before police arrived. "The initial indications are it appears to be an accidental shooting that occurred within Suisun City," Vallejo Police Department Cmdr. Andrew White said.

"We found out he's in stable condition, so he's doing really good," Breauna Bowers said.

Bowers is 19 years old and is the toddler's sister. She told ABC7 News Powell is her mother's boyfriend and she doesn't believe he was trying to kill the officers. "I can assume possibly he thought his son was dead and was distraught and just wanted to commit suicide a certain way, who knows," Bowers said.

Police said the suspect had a high-capacity magazine that could hold 70 rounds.

Officials said Powell is at a hospital in critical condition.

Both officers were unharmed in the incident.
