New spare the air initiatives issued to protect Bay Area air quality
SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- November 1 is the start of the winter spare the air season and there are a couple of new initiatives to protect the air we breathe in the Bay Area.
Starting Tuesday, November 1, no new construction in the Bay Area is allowed to have wood-burning fireplaces or stoves. So, new fireplaces will have to be fueled by gas or electricity.

Also, The National Park Service has banned recreational beach fires at San Francisco's Ocean Beach, not just on spare the air days as in the past, but throughout the entire winter season.
The park service took to Twitter to show rangers this past weekend enjoying a beach fire pit for the last time until March. "This is going to mean cleaner air for us, move to cleaner options," Tom Flanagan said.
The Bay Area Air Quality Management District reminds everyone wood-burning is banned from Novemeber 1 through February whenever it calls a spare the air alert.
Those will most likely be on calm, clear and cold days when particulates are trapped close the ground where we live and breathe.
