SAN JOSE (KGO) -- The annual food giveaway is kicking off at Sacred Heart in San Jose. The nonprofit is coming up a short this year and is making a big push for donations.

Sacred Heart has lots of food boxes ready to go, but they need more of the centerpiece of the Thanksgiving meal -- the turkey. The need is great, they still need 2,000 more.

"So, even though unemployment looks great. What we're seeing is people are struggling to pay bills, with paying the rent. So they have to decide on a lot of them can't put money into buying food for things like Thanksgiving," said David Thompson, Sacred Heart Community Service.

"The rents are so expensive. The bills, we have to pay everything. So, that's why we come to Sacred Heart every year because everything is expensive. We have to do something," said Teresa Villalobos, San Jose resident.

Sacred Heart Community Service has been doing this since 1964. This year, 4,200 families will pick up a Thanksgiving food box filled with veggies, bread, pantry items and of course, the turkey.
