SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- A traffic mess on Lombard Street occurred after a horrific accident that killed one person and injured two others.

A stuck accelerator may have been to blame for the collision.

Walgreens pharmacist Cynthia Thai won't forget the sound of cars colliding at the intersection of Lombard and Divisadero streets. "I just heard a really loud bang," she said. "A lot of people scrambled to the front to see what was going on. It's crazy, I couldn't imagine how many got hurt."

Officials say they were able to retrieve all three drivers from their vehicles without the jaws of life, and that they had to perform CPR on one of the victims.

Police are still investigating the accident and traffic was gridlocked for hours. Divisadero Street will be closed for some time though Lombard street has reopened.

The accident has caused backups across the Marina and may be an issues for drivers heading toward the Golden Gate Bridge through Thursday afternoon.
