22-month-old girl in stable condition after Oakland shooting
OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- A 22-month-old child was transported to an Oakland hospital after suffering a gunshot wound Thursday afternoon.
The shooting happened in the area of 65th Avenue and Outlook, and the girl was driven to Highland Hospital before being transferred to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital for treatment.
The toddler was riding in a vehicle with her mother when the shooting occurred. Police did not know if the vehicle was moving, or parked when the shooting took place, or if anyone else was in the vehicle at the time.
Oakland Police Spokeswoman Officer Johnna Watson said investigators are looking into the possibility that the shooting was connected to a separate fatal shooting Wednesday afternoon in the 900 block of 16th Street where a man was killed.
A witness told ABC7's Laura Anthony she heard five or six shots. "I almost hit the deck," she said.
Members of the Oakland community were shocked by the shooting. "We should not have to start off our year, 2017 in Oakland with a baby maybe dying like this," Community Advocate Daryle Allums said. Allums founded Adamika Village, a group that offers support to mothers who lose children to street violence.
Family members at the hospital where the girl was being treated told Allums two cars were shooting at each other when the girl was struck by a stray bullet.
The girl was in stable condition. "I can let you know she is stable. And, we just ask for prayers. We're holding up fine," a member of the girl's family said.
