Officials are investigating after a fatal officer-involved shooting occurred near a Home Depot on Soscol Avenue in Napa Monday afternoon.

Napa police received 911 calls about a man with a knife inside Home Depot at 6:15 p.m.

Napa Police Department Chief Steve Potter said officers responded and made contact with a man in a parking lot at Soscol and Kansas avenues near the Black Bear Diner. "There were shots fired by two officers. The subject is deceased and the officers are down being interviewed by the Napa Sheriff's Department," Potter said.

One woman told ABC7 News she was terrified as she drove into the Home Depot parking lot and saw a man lunge at the front of her car with a knife.

A woman running an errand at Home Depot says a man who she described as crazed and angry was stabbing and slashing at cars and tires.

One man saw it all unfold from a cash register in the store. "He was really acting aggressive. He was screaming and kicking cars around. I just saw him walk right around here and he just crossed the street. I just kept doing my job and then I heard four to five gunshots," witness Osvaldo Gonzalez said.

The two veteran officers are now on administrative leave pending the investigation.

Some witnesses who live in a homeless encampment say they heard as many as 14 shots fired. One homeless woman says she knows the suspect who died, a young homeless man in his early 20s who she described him as a nice guy.

Police won't say what prompted the officers to open fire when they first arrived.
