At Schroededers downtown, there was plenty of elbow room at the bar. "We usually have a good crowd for happy hour, for the after work crowd, but this evening has been a little bit slow," said manager Aram Roubinian. "Slower than usual, especially for a Friday."

Rush hour traffic was lighter than usual because so many people left early.

"My company just told me to go home," said San Francisco resident Linda Nguyen. "And I went home to the Presidio and was still out."

With no power at home, she brought friends to a restaurant in the Marina, which was still closed, and had delivery people waiting outside.

Some of her neighbors made the best of it.

"We just sort of decided -- okay, we're not going to get much done today, it's a beautiful day, so we just made a picnic and go to the beach," said Marina resident Helen Pelzman.

"Today was a San Francisco snow day, that meant that you couldn't go to school," said San Francisco resident Elizabeth Scarborough. "Couldn't do normal things."

Her son and his friends did go to school but got out early.

"If you go to the bathroom, there's no light when you go to the bathroom," said 2nd grader Keira Nance. "So we had to use these freaky candles."
