23-month-old child fatally struck by vehicle in Union City parking lot

UNION CITY, Calif. -- Police are investigating after a toddler was hit and killed by a car after he ran into a parking lot in Union City on Saturday.

Police said it appears that the 23-month-old boy ran into the parking lot at 1720 Decoto Road from a nearby store while his parents were shopping. Before the parents realized what was happening, the boy was hit by a slow-moving vehicle, police said.

Police were dispatched to the scene around 3:15 p.m. and found the boy under a car in the parking lot. He was taken to a trauma center, but died during treatment, according to police.

The driver of the vehicle is cooperating with police and witnesses have provided consistent statements, police said.
