Ann Coulter protests in Berkeley still cost university thousands despite her cancellation
Conservative author Ann Coulter may not have appeared at UC Berkeley but she's still costing the university thousands of dollars for security and police during protests.

BERKELEY, Calif. (KGO) -- Conservative author Ann Coulter may not have appeared at UC Berkeley but she's still costing the university a lot of money.

"Berkeleyside" reports the police agencies that provided security at last week's free speech rallies racked up as much as $500,000 in overtime pay.

The university confirmed it will pick up some of the bill.

400 officers from the Hayward and Berkeley police departments, as well as the Alameda County Sheriff's Department, joined UC Berkeley police to monitor the rallies near Civic Center Park and Sproul Plaza.

The rallies were relatively peaceful.
