Skiing continues at Squaw Valley following Fourth of July weekend

SQUAW VALLEY, Calf. (KGO) -- A lot of snow has melted at Squaw Valley, but enough remains that skiing is not over for the year.

On Tuesday, skiers were waving the American flag, dressed in patriotic shorts and tank tops -- an unlikely sight on the Fourth of July.

This was all made possibly because the resort got 60 feet of snow this past winter, more than the previous four years combined.

It's a similar story on Mount Bachelor in Oregon, where skiers were able to celebrate America's birthday on the slopes for only the ninth time in history.

"Can't wait to do it again. Hopefully another year, but I don't know. This is probably the best snow of the season in my lifetime. Fourth of July, happy birthday America," Hillsborough resident Marlene Tuzar said.

Happy indeed for Tuzar, who relished the rare opportunity to sky Tahoe one day and sunbathe on its shores the next.

Back to Squaw, you'll notice the lifts are stopped. From this point on, you can only ski on Saturday mornings.

Mammoth Mountain in Southern California remains opens as well. Neither resort has set a closing date.
