San Ramon deals with sudden rash of car burglaries

SAN RAMON, Calif. (KGO) -- A rash of car break-ins along the Interstate 680 corridors in San Ramon has police digging into surveillance video in hope of identifying the criminals.

The phone started ringing off the hook at the San Ramon police department at dawn with people reporting their car had been broken into overnight.

In all the cases, Thieves shattered the side windows on the driver or passenger side and scoured seats and the glovebox for valuables. In one instance they found the key fob to another car and clicked it open.

"I know there was a vehicle stolen also and that was subsequently recovered in the Oakland area," said Cpl. Michael Schneider of the San Ramon police.

Police say it's likely the criminals exited I-680 and zig-zagged through neighborhoods just west of the freeway, smashing car windows along residential streets and in driveways.

"It's random, they may hit us today and hit Pleasanton tomorrow," Schneider added.

Neighbors say there are frequent reports of car burglaries around here but did not want to go on camera.
