Felipe Fire in South San Jose burns at least 70 acres

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- Cal Fire officials said a brush fire that started Monday afternoon southeast of San Jose is 80 percent contained Tuesday morning.

According to Cal Fire spokeswoman Pam Temmermand, the fire has burned a total of 70 acres at this time.

The fire was first reported Monday just before 4 p.m., prompting officials to order evacuations in a one-mile perimeter around Metcalf and San Felipe roads.

Temmermand said the evacuations were no longer in effect.

More firefighters are expected at the scene Tuesday morning to relieve the overnight crews.

At least 150 firefighters were at the scene battling the blaze on Monday.

It appears that this fire started as a car fire that spread to the dry grass.

Initially firefighters thought they would have to evacuate families, but they were able to contain it enough that evacuations weren't necessary.

"We were concerned as the fire was spreading pretty rapidly at first that there might be a need for some evacuations. However, this area is pretty rural, it wouldn't have affected a lot of people anyway," Jim Crawford said.

No structures have been damaged and no one was injured in this fire.
