Junkyard catches fire, sends smoke into San Leandro skies
A two-alarm fire that broke out at a metal salvage yard in San Leandro Tuesday afternoon, near the Oakland International Airport, has been brought under control, fire officials said.

SAN LEANDRO, Calif. -- A two-alarm fire that broke out at a metal salvage yard in San Leandro Tuesday afternoon, near the Oakland International Airport, has been brought under control, fire officials said.

The fire was reported at 4:29 p.m. at Alco Iron and Metal Company, located near Doolittle Drive and Davis Street, according to Alameda County Fire Department Battalion Chief Stephanie Radecke.

The blaze caused heavy smoke the area.

No injuries were reported.

Fire officials had asked residents west of Interstate Highway 880 between Davis Street and Fairway Drive to remain indoors and to close all windows. Drivers were asked to avoid the area.

Fire officials are using a drone to check for hotspots.
