Reward grows to $100K in the killing of El Cerrito attorney

EL CERRITO, Calif. (KGO) -- Police in the East Bay announced Wednesday they have no leads in solving the murder of a prominent San Francisco attorney who was shot and killed in front of his El Cerrito home.

Family and friends of Jim Gilliland are still searching for clues in the 2016 murder.

"It's most likely to be solved with information from somebody out there who knows what happened," El Cerrito Police Lieutenant Robert De La Campa said.

Nearly nine months after Gilliland was gunned down in front of his El Cerrito home, police say they are no closer to finding his killer, despite having surveillance video of cars in the neighborhood the night of the murder.

"We don't know what we're looking for yet, so in the event somebody can identify a suspect for us, then we know what kind of car they have, then maybe we can look for that car in those videos," De La Campa said.

Gilliland was shot multiple times on his front porch on Mira Vista Drive last October.

Though there were no signs of a robbery, investigators can't rule it out. They also can't say for certain whether the 62-year-old civil attorney was targeted, or the victim of a random attack.

"It's hit me very hard, and I was just one of the many," family friend Brian Colucci said.

Colucci said Gilliland was a mentor to him at the San Francisco law firm Kirkpatrick, Townsend.

"He was loved, not only by his friends and colleagues, he was universally liked. Even opposing counsel would talk about how much they liked Jim," Colucci said.

Now, Gilliland's friends and family have doubled the reward, from $50,000 to $100,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.

A billboard with the reward information will soon go up near the Oakland Coliseum.
