South Bay residents try to stay cool in heat

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- This August heat is sending many people indoors with air conditioning to seek relief. It's also postponing the start of heat-inducing projects. People and pets in San Jose are trying to balance exercise with caution.

The goal today is to find a way to be cool and stay safe. Some walkers weren't looking for deals at Oakridge Mall in San Jose -- this morning they were looking for exercise. A Heat Advisory is pushing people indoors all across the Bay Area. Mall walkers are taking advantage of the free air conditioning.

"The weather's always right here," said Gary Kegel, San Jose resident.

Michael Zamudio of San Jose has a big project today.

"Putting up another layer of insulation in my attic," said Michael.

"But you're not going to do it, are you?" asked ABC7's Matt Keller.

"Oh no," said Michael.

It's a tough job, but Michael is making sure his worker is taken care of in the heat.

"Basically disconnect the vents so it blows the cool air into the attic while he's up there. It's just so he doesn't sweat because I'm not climbing up there to drag him down in case he passes out," said Michael.

The morning is the busy time in the summer at Butcher Dog Park in San Jose.

"The dogs don't like it when it's hot. I'd say everybody will be out of here by 11 a.m., 11:30 a.m.," said Roger Wolf, Campbell resident.

Dogs don't sweat like humans do, so they have to pant to cool themselves. They can overheat quickly. Roger Wolf knows that and keeps his four legged friend home in the afternoon.

"So spend a couple of hours here, go home and then decide if I'm going to nap or have lunch. Nice life, is that you or the dog. No that's both of us," said Roger.

Some more tips for your dog -- obviously make sure they have enough water, never leave them in your car and be careful when taking them for a walk. The ground can get really hot and burn their paws.
