A GoFundMe account has been set up to help a couple who lost their two kids in the raging North Bay wildfires.

At least 24,000 have been raised so far to help the Shepherd family.

Parents Jon and Sara are still hospitalized with severe burns, but continue to improve day by day.

They have a long road ahead of them. Their 17-year-old daughter Kressa passed away October 28 after suffering burns to more than half her body, and the couple's 14-year-old son was also killed trying to escape the fire.

At this time, Mendocino County fire victims are focusing on finding homes after the Redwood Valley fire. The fire south of Willits burned more than 36,000 acres.

At least 325 homes were destroyed, and many fire victims are still in RV campgrounds or hotels.

County officials are assessing three or four locations with existing buildings that could be used as transitional housing.

Calfire's Mendocino chief said a while back he's proud of how firefighters and the community worked together that tragic night. "We had off-duty firefighters, police officers, everybody, neighbors with fire department experience that were on their days off from other cities. Everybody came together and were able to rescue many lives because of that," Calfire Mendocino Fire Chief George Gonzalez said.

Nine people died in the county, but the chief said it could have been much worse if county officials had not launched emergency procedures as fast they as did.
