"I used some photos that I had made with IntroFlirt, which was a duo that was present at Ghost Ship when it... when we lost them," said Holly Curtis, who honored her friends that were killed in the Oakland Ghost Ship Fire by placing candles at Chapel of the Chimes. "It's a terrible, terrible loss to Oakland and to everybody."

The memorial is marked with 36 candles and 36 roses representing the 36 lives lost and are open to the public all weekend.

"It has been a year, but people may just now be even taking the time to slow down and consider the impact of all of this," said Chapel of the Chimes General Manager Dave Madden.

At Oakland Museum of California there was a moment of silence, then the victims' names were read aloud.

"Every time we do this it's hard and it brings back memories of that day," said artist Chris Treggiari. "You know, a year later it just feels the same."

Treggari's Ghost Ship altar is on display at the museum. He collaborated with Alex Ghassan, a Ghost Ship victim, so he became a front and center piece of the art. Other victims' family members came forward wanting them to be included, so the altar expanded.

Visitors are encouraged to write out their feelings.

"A lot more people need to be held accountable for the City of Oakland," Treggari added. "The people who own the building and of course, the people already being held accountable in jail."

Messages of remembrance and continued calls for change still linger, one year after the deadly fire.
