Alameda Co. Sheriff's Dept. stolen trailer recovered in Oakland

ALAMEDA COUNTY, Calif. (KGO) -- The Alameda County Sheriff's Department is happy to have a stolen trailer back in its possession. They say a bold group of thieves stole it from law enforcement property and that's not all detectives recovered at the chop shop in Oakland.

The thieves got away with thousands of vehicles and things. One officer said 'it's never a good idea to steal from police.' He said 'we will get you.' That's exactly what happened.

Two broken locks give a glimpse of a crime spree that spanned two nights in the cities of San Leandro and Oakland. Alameda County sheriff's detectives say the thieves pulled off bold and brazen burglaries

"I was obviously very distressed, and thought perhaps we might have video tape of it," said Michael Zatkin, property manager.

Surveillance video shows the thieves casing a few cars in an office complex parking lot on Doolittle Road in San Leandro, then 30 minutes away, they stole the trailer.

"I was first person to realize it Monday morning, I started calling police and the insurance agency and the owner of the company," said Tim Mills, Black Sheep Adventures.

The trailer belonged to Black Sheep Bike Tour Rentals.

"It makes me sad that someone would take something that's not theirs," said Mills.

The company rents and offers tours on high end bicycles. Fortunately it was empty, but it wasn't the only trailer thieves got their hands on.

"Pretty brazen that if steal from the sheriff you're asking to get caught," said Alameda County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Ray Kelly.

"It's a $50,000 trailer that plays a vital role in our ability to get produce and healthy vegetables to people in our county," said Sgt. Kelly.

Sgt. Kelly says the burglars took the sheriff's department trailer the night before. They found it, along with tens of thousands of other stolen vehicles and items in a remote area along Hegenberger Road in Oakland.

Investigators arrested two people at the scene. They believe the suspects planned to resell the stuff on the black market.
