Armed suspect shot, injured by Antioch police

ANTIOCH, Calif. -- A fleeing suspect armed with a handgun was shot and injured by a police officer in pursuit this afternoon in Antioch, police said.

Officers made contact with a group of people in the 1600 block of Sycamore Drive about a block from the Contra Costa County Fairgrounds at 4:16 p.m., police said.

One person in the group was armed with a handgun and attempted to flee from the police officers.

As officers were in pursuit of the armed suspect, one of the officers shot the suspect, police said.

According to police, the suspect was detained and then transported to the hospital with injuries that are not considered life threatening.

The officer who fired the shot is a veteran officer of the Antioch Police Department and was not injured during the incident, police said.
