CAMPBELL, Calif. (KGO) -- Arson investigators are looking into the cause of three car fires in Campbell overnight.

The 911 call came just after 4:20 this morning. Three sedans were on fire in the back of the Campbell Plaza Shopping Center on Winchester and Budd Avenue. A captain said the fires started in the interiors for all three vehicles, not in the engine compartments, so that makes it automatically suspicious.

All the vehicles were severely damaged. A gas cap was off one of the vehicles and on the ground. So they're looking at the possibility someone was stealing gas. But investigators say that wouldn't be the reason the cars caught fire. Jumper cables were also on the ground under one of the other vehicles.

Firefighters found empty beer and wine bottles nearby and say they respond to a lot of calls here. They say there's a lot of evidence now they have to piece together what led to the fires. There were several other car fires in the area over the past several months. Investigators don't believe these fires are related.
