NEW YORK -- The boyfriend of Morgan Freeman's granddaughter has been arrested in her fatal stabbing on a New York City street.

Lamar Davenport, 30, was arrested early Monday and charged with second-degree murder in the stabbing of actress E'dena Hines near her apartment building on West 162nd Street in Washington Heights.

Police responding to a 911 call at about 3 a.m. found the 33-year-old Hines lying on the street with multiple stab wounds to the chest. She was pronounced dead at Harlem Hospital.

A 30-year-old man was taken into police custody at the scene in front of Hines' apartment on West 162nd Street.

One eyewitness saw everything unfold from his window.

"I go to the window, and I see him on top of a woman, and I couldn't really see what was going on," said Bryndon Tarafa. "Then the police came like two police cars came and arrested the guy."

Freeman issued a statement saying that "The world will never know her artistry and talent, and how much she had to offer." Hines had studied acting and was involved with teaching urban youth. She is the granddaughter of Freeman's first wife.

No working telephone number for Davenport could be found. It wasn't immediately clear whether he had a lawyer.

Hines was actually Freeman's step-granddaughter, but Freeman's publicist says the Oscar-winning actor thought of her as his granddaughter. Hines was the granddaughter of Freeman's first wife.
