BENICIA, Calif. (KGO) -- The Benicia Police Department unveiled a special tribute to the surviving family members of an 8-year-old homicide victim on Thursday.

Gavin Buchanan and his parents were found dead in their burned out El Dorado County cabin in September 2015.

Police say the tribute recognizes Gavin's support for the department's K-9 program. The 8-year-old had donated his own money to buy ballistic vests.

The family also raised more than $7,600 during a fundraiser at Pet Food Express in February. Officials say much of that money went to purchasing the safety equipment for the new K-9 vehicle for the police department, which was unveiled at Thursday's event.
