Parents arrested after 9-month-old shot in abdomen by father

EAST NEW YORK -- A mother and father are in police custody after a 9-month-old baby girl was shot in the abdomen in Brooklyn.

The incident occurred Saturday afternoon around 4:30 on 580 Sutter Avenue in East New York.

Police say the father had an illegal Colt 45 gun in the house. The father told police he was cleaning the Colt 45 when it accidentally discharged. The bullet struck the baby in the hip, and then came out the back.

The baby was escorted by police to Woodhull Medical Center, and was then transferred to Bellevue. The baby was in surgery earlier Saturday night, and is currently in stable condition.

The father's charges are pending, and his name has not yet been released.

The father has a record for possession of a weapon.
