SAN MATEO, Calif. (KGO) -- Police in San Mateo captured two burglary suspects after a chase and shelter-in-place order.

It's quiet now in the San Mateo neighborhood, but it was a long night for both police and residents. Police say they got a call at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday from a person who saw a car burglary. That description led police to try to stop a vehicle on 4th Avenue. A short pursuit took place and eventually the car crashed. The passenger was arrested, but the driver ran off.

"The officers believed one of the suspects was armed and had fled toward the apartment building. So a perimeter was immediately set up and we called in that point SWAT to secure the perimeter, and after about a two-hour search the suspect was located, gave up, and was taken into custody," said San Mateo Police Department Lt. Ted Gonzales.

Some people were evacuated out of the search area. Police also set up a perimeter blocking East 5th Avenue, East 2nd Avenue, south El Dorado Street and South Fremont Street. People who were home were asked to shelter-in-place and lock all the doors and windows. A Red Cross shelter was set up. The all-clear was given at about 2 a.m. Residents are allowed back home. There is no word on if a weapon was found.
