DALY CITY, Calif. (KGO) -- A child was hit by a car this afternoon in Daly City and she was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police say 12-year-old girl has serious injuries and is fighting for her life. Her shoes and garments mark the spot where it happened.

The young girl was hit just before 2 p.m. as she was walking across Westmoor in the crosswalk at Mayfair Avenue, just down from busy Skyline Boulevard.

Longtime resident Charles Dennison lives across the street from the crosswalk. "I'm not really surprised that that happened," Dennison said. "Unfortunately, that's a really awful intersection. I never drive and make left or right turn on it. I always go the opposite way. I don't even like to cross the street, because coming around Skyline, it gets real foggy. People are in a hurry."

Dennison said the Skyline Mall is a busy place at all hours of the day and that drivers speed as they make the turn from Skyline onto Westmoor.

"When you come around the corner, there's no stop sign, no nothing," Dennison said. "You could be in the crosswalk and if you're not looking left or right, people don't care. They make the left turn. It's a bad, bad intersection.

Nick Misthos echoes the same warning. He crosses the street all the time on his walker. "When I try to cross the street, people won't stop. They'll even try to cut me off," he said.

The driver is being interviewed at Daly City police station.
