Children placed into protective custody after drugs found at Napa home

NAPA, Calif. -- Three people were arrested and two children were place into protective custody after detectives found drugs and paraphernalia in plain view at a Napa home Tuesday evening.

Detectives with the Napa Special Investigations Bureau arrived at the home, located in the 100 block of Freeway Drive, to conduct a probation search on Steven Smith, a 47-year-old resident at the house, according to the NSIB.

Smith lives at the house with his 25-year-old daughter, Akacia Smith, her two young children and her 38-year-old boyfriend Jeremy Pendergrass, the NSIB said.

While checking the residence, detectives discovered small bags containing methamphetamine and meth pipes in plain view. The drugs and the pipes were in reach of the couple's 2-year-old child, who was present during the search, according to the NSIB.

Napa County Child Protective Services responded to the residence and took the two children into protective custody, NSIB officials said.

Steven Smith was arrested on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine and violation of probation. Akacia Smith and Pendergrass were both arrested on suspicion of child endangerment, possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

All three were booked into the Napa County Department of Corrections, according to the NSIB.
